What is there that can be said about Sweetest Day? This is a holiday that has most definitely an interesting history behind it. Let`s dive in to learn more about the history of Sweetest Day and how it is currently celebrated in parts of the United States.
As it currently stands, the original origins or rather the motive behind Sweetest Day is currently unclear to some. It is believed that the holiday originated as a means of generating higher sales for candy makers. Whereas to others, it was a day to celebrate those less fortunate and more in need. Such as but not limited to orphans, sick people in the hospital and the like. No one is really quite sure which one was the true motive for the start of the holiday. However what is known is that it is gaining ground and is poised to become a major nationally-recognized holiday within the next decade or so.
History has it that it was over in the Cleveland area on October of the early 1920s that`s a committee consisting of 12 confectionery bigwigs came together and decided that they were going to try and create a new holiday to help bolster some sales and also to help those less fortunate. One of the main spearheads of the endeavor was an individual by the name of C. C. Hartzell. He along with a gentleman by the name of Herbert Kingston helped to spread the holiday to children, orphanages, and hospitals throughout the Cleveland area that year. It is said that over 30,000 boxes of candies were distributed in the Cleveland area alone in the first few years of the holiday. This was done in an attempt at getting it off the ground.
Later in the late 1930s, the holiday began to gain ground and New York would attempt to have a Sweetest Day there as well. New York City would go on to distribute over 20,000 boxes of candies in the late 1930s to churches, orphanages, and hospitals in hopes of trying to help the holiday game ground on an annual basis. Since then different states and cities have started to celebrate Sweetest Day. For the most part, it is currently celebrated on the 3rd Saturday of October.
Though not every state currently celebrates Sweetest Day in the United States, more and more states are starting to celebrate it. With its first origin in the Ohio area that has since spread to many of the states in the Lake Region all the way to some places in Florida, California, and places in between. It is believed that as residents move from these parts to newer regions of the US, they begin to spread the holiday to their new region.
Since its original Creation in the 1920s, it has now become almost like a second Valentine`s Day to some people. These days people find themselves using it more as a day to celebrate romance or a friend by showing them a gesture of kindness. Some people choose to send candies while many choose to send flowers and a card. You know that a holiday is becoming more and more successful when a major card company such as Hallmark creates over hundreds of cards for it.
